Trained teachers in Ghana say they are fed up with the Education Minister for frustrating their efforts of getting employment after their training.
The teachers say the directives to get employment in the education sector were one too many and thus called on President Akufo-Addo to call Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Minister, to order.
Their latest outburst rather comes on the back of reports that the Ministry of Education would employ teachers based on the available vacancies in the sector.
Ekwow Djan Painstil, the immediate past General Secretary of the Trained Teachers’ Association, explained that on March 6, last year, about 16,000 of the members were charged GHc10 each to register and apply for employment online.
They were, however, stunned to later learn from the Ministry that they were to further register to sit a licensure examination, subsequent to which only passed students would be gainfully employed in September this year.
He said 21,000 of the students who successfully sat the exams passed and, again, the Ministry tasked them to do National Service before they would be enrolled in the sector, which they obliged and are doing it.
Djan said they were shocked to hear the sector Minister say that teachers who would complete the National Service would only be employed based on the available vacancies, and even with that, the teachers would, first and foremost, apply for it.
These directives, Ekwow Djan Paintsil said, were too frustrating and it is time President Akufo-Addo called Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh to order before the teachers call a mass protest.
