It’s time to try traditional medicine in COVID-19 fight – Mahama

According to Dr. Obu, “China also proved to the World that, traditional Medicines is significant in the healthcare industry. The Chinese employs about 90% of their Traditional Chinese Medicines in managing the covid 19.”

“I think, this is very laudable and the way to go as a country. In 2019, the WHO asserted that about 80% of the people uses traditional and alternative medicines. The WHO has affirmed their support for integration of traditional and alternative medicines into national healthcare in their 2019 document.”

Shut up if you know nothing about herbal medicine – Dr. Nyarkotey blasts Dr. Yankson

This appeared to have angered the alternative medicine practitioner who took his his Facebook page to ask him to shut his mouth is he [Dr. Yankson] knows nothing about traditional medicine and allow those in the field to do the talking.

Explore the role of Alternative Medicine in Covid 19 fight-John Mahama

Raphael Nyarkotey Obu, PhD

Former President, John Dramani Mahama had won my heart yesterday for supporting the role of traditional and alternative medicines in the fight against COVID-19.

I think, this is very laudable and the way to go as a country. In 2019, the WHO asserted that about 80% of the people uses traditional and alternative medicines. The WHO has affirmed their support for integration of traditional and alternative medicines into national healthcare in their 2019 document.

China also proved to the World that, traditional Medicines is significant in the healthcare industry. The Chinese employs about 90% of their Traditional Chinese Medicines in managing the covid 19.

Recently, we were told by the University of Ghana research team that, we are dealing with the same strain of virus found in China; hence, we need to employ the same Chinese strategy in fighting the pandemic in Ghana. The Chinese employs both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western approach in fighting the pandemic.
I believe this is the solution. Currently, the Center for Plants Medicine Research Center, Mampong, on Joy News affirmed that, they are carrying analysis on some selected herbal products to fight covid 19 and the result shows positive. I think , it is time the government and philanthropists support the Center to speed up with their research.

Research also proves the impact of integrative Medicine in improving the quality of life(QOL) of patients affected by COVID-19 demonstrated in the Chinese strategy and many others.

According to the former president ” It is also time to explore the role of alternative medicine and traditional remedies in the fight against the Corona virus. Some traditional medicines are known to boost the immune system and can help both in the prevention of people succumbing to the disease and also play a role as a palliative function in the management of persons suffering with COVID-19″

The former president is right, there are thousands of Naturopathic remedies backed by sound research with antiviral properties and immune boosting capacities which must be employ to help those affected by Corona virus.

It is rather unfortunate that, though, the Ghana Health Service Patients charter affirms Support for alternative medicine if it would improve on the quality of life (QOL) of the patient; we have neglected the practice best known to us with many condemnation stems from the conventional medical sector. Ghana is a nation of pluralist Medicine and Medicine is not about competition. It is about improving the health of the people.
The Chinese have shown us the way and other countries doing same. The conventional sector have failed the system in finding cure for the pandemic and we need to explore alternative approaches. Life is about finding alternative approaches when all means failed.

I believe it is time for the government and our president Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo to also affirm his support and research into traditional and alternative medicine in the fight against covid 19. This is in line with the Ghana beyond Aid Agenda. The covid 19 pandemic has proven the challenges in the healthcare sector and this is the right time to practice integrative Medicine and address the challenges.

We wait to hear from the president on his position on alternative and traditional medicine for the fight against COVID-19..

Thank you
