A Look at the Competition

The competition was held last season and Gahanna Lincoln was only able to become the runners-up in Division 1. They were behind Thomas Worthington who garnered 36 points while the Lions only got 31 points.

Although they were only runners-up it was the first time they had come so close to winning the championship. The last time they won a title was in 2009 when they won the State Title. Gahanna Lincoln High School has won 31 league championships since 1953.

Since winning last season the school is now more confident than ever to go for the top spot. Jason Mehalic was the regional top qualifier in the 3200m last season. He is one of the guys who is learning to develop himself in the track team. He is also one of the top figures who is going to return to the track this season.

The school is planning to help younger guys to develop courage and learn how to race. The older guys who have gained much experience from last season and other seasons have stepped up in terms of leadership and performance. Some of the experienced sprinters who join Jason Mehalic are Jerome Buckner, Joseph GathuruamdLaCarr Trent.

All of them are senior sprinters who are expected to fly the flag high. They have depicted a level of confidence is what is going to enable them to set the bar high in this season.

Last season Buckner and Gathuru captured the 1600m title in just 03minutes, 14.9 seconds. They were later joined in the 400m relay by Tolliver and Trent where they finished second place. Trent also went on to finish runner-up in 100m in 10.73 seconds.

The girl’s track team were also not left behind. According to their second-year coach Shawn Johnson, the girl’s team has been consistent in all their championships. The Lions shared the Division 1 2015 state championship with Cincinnati Withrow. However, for the past two years, they have been finishing second.

For instance, last season the Lions had 51 points while Withrow had 58 points.

They were able to capture the nations best time in the event. During the 400 relay seniors Allison Groves and Claire Steigerwald, junior Shyne Deas and junior anchor Madison Martinez broke the state record at 08minutes,53.59 seconds.

Last year Martinez was the winner in the 1600m relay while she finished second in 800m. The coach is confident that since she and her fellow teammates participated in last season’s competition.

The coach is confident in both the seniors and juniors who are part of his team. Although the freshmen are not that good, they will get better with the help of the seniors.
