Tema youth fight MCE for hospital

Felix Mensah Nii Annang-La, Tema MCE

The youth of Tema Newtown have pressed the alarm bell of a demonstration should the Tema Assembly fail to give the area a befitting hospital.

Tema Newtown has one dilapidated health center and according to the residents, several pressures they had mounted including a demonstration, to get their 49-year-old health center upgraded to a hospital status, had been unfruitful.

The health facility, with leaking roofing and few beds and wards, according to Doctor Joseph, Medical Director of the facility, is, indeed, dire for rehabilitation.

Titus Glover, Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema East, though had lobbied the Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC) to upgrade the Tema Newtown health center to a hospital status, and land had already been secured for the project, the youth said they could not believe their MP.

At a town hall meeting at Tema Newtown organised by the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), one of the youth raised the concerns of the indigenes, adding that health personnel did not work at night.

“We will go on a demonstration again in two weeks’ time, should we not see any activity for a new health facility,” the youth said, receiving loud applause from the gathering.

In his response, Felix Mensah Nii Annang-La, Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) Chief Executive, said the Tema Traditional Council (TTC), MP, and Assembly are collaborating to put up a well-equipped hospital at Tema Newtown.

“And let me add that Tema Lube Oil is ready to open a Dental Clinic as part of the new design for the new Tema Newtown Hospital,” he assured the aborigines of Tema Newtown.

He, thus, implored the youth to exercise huge restraint in order not to truncate the smooth collaboration the TTC, MP and Assembly are presently engaged in, as well as the Assembly’s lobbying with other companies to pool their resources to assist in the project.
