President Akufo-Addo has nominated Yohanne Ammah Ashitey to replace Felix Mensah Nii Anang-La as the new Tema Metro Chief Executive (MCE).
The nomination of Mr. Ashitey did not come as a surprise to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the East Tema constituency especially because the outgoing MCE, Nii Anang-La hardly proved his worth in the four years he was the MCE.
He said his vision was to restore Tema to its past glory, however, Nii Anang-La could not live by his much-touted ‘Tema Restoration Agenda’, which later became his household name.
“Anang-La could not even patch a pothole throughout the four years he was our MCE. Some of us didn’t know what he came to restore,” some residents observed.
The outgoing MCE and the former Member of Parliament for the area, Titus Nii Kwarteh Glover never saw eye-to-eye with each other in the runup to the 2020 general elections as both accused each other of some intraparty differences.
According to party insiders in the consistency, President Akufo-Addo might have refused to maintain Nii Anang-La for allegedly having a hand in the overwhelming parliamentary defeat Mr. Titus suffered in the hands of the NDC 2020 parliamentary candidate, Isaac Ashai Odamtten.
“Yohanne Ammah Ashitey is one of the boys of Titus Glover so if he (Yohanne) has been nominated by the President to replace Anang-La, then, just maybe, it is a way of telling Anang-La ‘you do me, I do you’,” a party insider thought.
Again, President Akufo-Addo might have decided to kick out Anang-La because his ‘Restoration Agenda’ rather appreciated candidate John
Mahama’s 2020 presidential election votes by 51 percent, the first time the NDC had registered such a high percentage score in the results of a presidential election.
That notwithstanding, the Tema Traditional Council (TTC) would be elated by the nomination of an indigene as the next MCE as that had been their call to the President.
The TTC had earlier threatened an unfriendly working environment to a non-indigene who would be nominated as the MCE for Tema.
The threat was made public at the pre-Homowo durbar at Manhean by Nii Amarh Somponu, the Shipi of the TTC.
