About 500 angry youth of Salaga in the newly created Savannah Region have taken over the community’s district police headquarters over the arrest of seven men for allegedly burning the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) office.
Some irate youth of Salaga, yesterday, set the NPP party office ablaze in a violent protest against the naming of Damongo as the capital of the new region.
Information available to Awakenewsonline indicates that some NPP executives were in the Salaga Party office when the incident happened, and so, families of the suspects and other angry youth have accused the party executives of wrongfully citing the suspects.
The families and friends of the suspects claim the seven were innocent of the inferno.
Abdulai Habib, Salaga Constituency Secretary of the NPP, said he could not disclose the names of the suspects, though iterated that most of the persons involved in the criminal act were party supporters.
He said the Constituency Chairman had been dragged by other indigenes to the police station to get the police release the suspects.
Eyewitnesses narrate Wednesday morning that about the 500 angry youth who had thronged the police station rained stones into the facility in protest of the arrest of the seven suspects, who, the eyewitnesses said, were minors who could not initiate such dastardly act.
Armed police personnel, the eyewitnesses said, had cordoned the police station.
Savannah Region is among the six new regions the government created, after a referendum, following petitions by the chiefs and people of the new regions.
