The Alliance for Social Equity & Accountability-ASEPA has urged the Ghana Police Service to within 12hours released ACP Dr. Benjamin Agordzo from its custody adding they will “mobilize people to get him out” if the Police continuen to keep him.
Dr. Agordzo who was arrested and charged with abetment to alleged coup plot was on January 21, 2020, granted a self recognizance bail by the Criminal High Court presided over by Justice Charles Ekow Baiden.
The Court pegged the bail at 500,000.00 Cedis. The Police Chief was also instructed to submit his passport to the Registrar of the High Court. He will also be required to present himself to the Inspector General of Police and the Director of BNI per the schedule presented in the ruling of the Court.
However, it has emerged that the Ghana Police Service is still holding the Police Chief in custody this ASEPA is of the view that “It appears this is becoming a regrettable trend in the behaviour of the Police, Last year a Court granted Mr.Gregory Afoko bail and till date, he is still being held by the Police despite meeting all bail conditions.”
“This wanton disregard for the Court and our Constitution must stop and it must stop today.” – A statement signed by ASEPA Executive Director, Mensah Thompson sighted by Awake News has added.
ACP Benjamin Agordzo is one of ten (10) persons charged for an attempted coup aimed at overthrowing the Akufo Addo administration.
“We are sending a clear warning to the Police if they are NOT afraid to break the law, we the Citizens would also NOT be afraid to put the laws in our hands as well.
We are cautioning them to respect the ruling of the Court and release ACP Agodzo or we will raid the Police Station and get him out ourselves.” – He said
