Purposeful Life is A Foundation for Achievement

Moses Katamani

Some think achievement is automatic, and that, they live their lives anyhow, thinking they will achieve results anyway. However, an achievement worth celebrating comes with purposefulness and consistency. What is consistent for achievement is that: when purpose meets opportunity; opportunity consistent with your purpose. Nothing comes by chance in life; only what you believe in and position yourself for is what you can achieve.

The word ‘purposeful’ comes from the root word “purpose”. According to the Oxford Dictionary purpose is “the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists or a person’s sense of resolve or determination”. Key p in the definition is: ‘reason for which… and sense of resolve or determination’. Thus, to be purposeful, it must be intentional; you must resolve that this is the course of life to take, and I must get a result no matter what the challenges are. Synonyms of purposeful are determined, resolute, being firm, and wilful about something. Thus, purposeful life comes with resolutions.

Living a purposeful life to me is not easy, but it is worth living. It is worth living because it gives a sense of direction and you can access yourself based on your resolutions or milestones you set for yourself. Not only that, purposeful life is worth living, because it helps us manage expectations and face challenges when they come. Many people are not able to achieve their dreams, because they could not define the reason for which they are living, and they think everything is by chance; that with a little challenge to their dreams, they draw in the towel.

Somebody said: “Life is full of good things and it is usually easy to pass those by for the better things… but the person who lives a purposeful life is the person who passes by the better things and strives for the best.” It is undeniable fact that it is sometimes strenuous to recognize the best for your life and humanity, but when you are purposeful, that is where gut feelings come in. The gut feeling makes you tell yourself that despite the difficulties I must go for the best. So purposeful life comes with its challenges, but I can say with all confidence and seriousness that, it is worth living than aimless life; a life without direction. A person who lives an aimless life is like an empty tin that has no content; and that it can be tossed around by many winds of life.

I gave this example before for illustration in one of my previous articles. A friend gave an analogy of a life without purpose: “A young man wakes up in the morning, he walks around without any plan for the day, he meets a friend going to the beach, he decides to follow him. At a crossroad, he meets a classmate going for a walk, he decides to follow his classmate for a walk. Not long, he meets a stranger who invites him for a party, and he decides to go for the party rather.” This young man has no purpose or direction for the day. Thus, a person without purpose can be tossed around by any wind, but a purposeful person can access opportunities and take advantage of what is best for him/her.

Thus, to live a purposeful life, build a good relationship with like-minds who will be able to help evaluate situations and opportunities with you before you take action. Why, because if you don’t build the right relationship, the wrong friends around you can easily draw you away from your purpose. In the initial stages of my vision, l related with people who I thought could support my dream, but I realized later that their dreams are not the same as mine. Some are very good people, but I had to create different relationships with like minds with the right synergy. Therefore, a purposeful life without like-minds can easily draw you back. That is why I can say without any reservation that, if you are married to somebody who does not believe in your dreams, it can be disastrous to your purpose and even your life.

Again, to live a purposeful life, you must learn to take responsibility. When living a purposeful life you need not run away from your problems or your challenges. Don’t even blame people for your mistakes. Accept full responsibility for your actions and mistakes, deal with them, and move forward. Don’t play the blame game when you meet challenges or fail, rather learn lessons from them. I lost some amount of money in the past, I was also exploited by people, but my ‘personal responsibility mindset’ helped me look beyond those disappointments and I can say confidently, things are better today than the days I became homeless.

Finally, to succeed with or achieve your dreams, keep moving forward. Purposeful people never stop pursuing their dream, when they meet challenges, they push harder. Take note: every achiever ever had unpleasant and difficult moments in their lives, but what makes the difference in their lives is that, they never live in their past they look into the future. Tony Robbins said: “The past does not equal the future unless you choose to live there”. Hence rather than dwelling in the past, you must focus on today and the future. It is much fulfilling to dream and see your dream come through. Hence always be purposeful and positive; for purposeful life is worth living. Though you may face challenges, with determination you will certainly achieve your purpose.
