Protect not assault – Prez Akufo-Addo speaks on assault of nursing mother by policeman

President Nana Addo Dankwa AKufo-Addo has waded into the arrest of Corporal Frederick Amanor, aka Skalla, who assaulted a woman at the banking hall of Midland Savings and Loans Limited in Accra.

According to him, “Police men are meant to protect citizens, not to assault citizens”.

The police officer, identified as Frederick Amanor, is seen in a video striking the woman, who was holding her baby, multiple times on the head, first with an umbrella.

The victim, Patience Safo, was ruthlessly assaulted by a police officer.

The only crime of the woman is that she got into the banking hall few minutes after the closing hours so she was asked to leave and return the following day but she insisted of staying until she collects her money, GH¢250.

The policeman punched her powerfully in the face after he was asked to drive her away.

Social media was rife with outrage when the video of the incident went viral on social media.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) ordered for his arrest after watching the distressing video, according to the police public relation unit.

Nana Addo speaking on the development supported the IGP to sanction the officer.

“Police men are meant to protect citizens, not to assault citizens,” the president tweeted on Saturday.

“The measures that the IGP (Inspector General of Police) has taken to sanction the erring police man, and to make sure these things don’t happen again have my complete support,” he said in a Facebook post.

Nana Addo added that he supports “100% the measures he (IGP) has taken, so that we can stop these incidents from proliferting.”
