The President of the Republic of Ghana and the Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged the Ministry of Defence and the Military High Command to begin the process of establishing a war college in Ghana this year.
He made these declarations when he joined troops of GAF to celebrate the 2022 end of year West African Soldiers and Social Activities (WASSA) at the forecourt of the Department of Public Relations (DPR) held on Wednesday, February 1, 2023.
He said that the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GET Fund) has been tasked to provide the seed capital for the establishment of the war college would serve as a hub for training and educating officers.
Prior to joining the troops for the celebration of the 2022 end of year WASSA, the president undertook some activities as part of governments effort to retool GAF. “
Primarily, he commissioned a newly constructed 300-bed-accommodation unit named Joseph Siaw Agyepong at the 37 Military Hospital. This accommodation unit was intended to accommodate young soldiers who were to commence their basic training in medical care”.
He also handed over a United Nations (UN) Level 4 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) field hospital located near the Air Force Base in Accra to the military high command.
Thereafter, the president familiarised himself with the operations of DIKMAC Ltd, a joint venture company under the Defence Industries Holding Company Limited (DIHOC Ltd) which is an armoured vehicle assembly plant located at Gondar Barracks and handed over a fleet of vehicles to the headquarters of 15 Armoured Brigade.
At the general headquarters, the president commissioned an ultramodern office complex for the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS).
The Minister for Defence, Hon Dominic Nitiwul, on his part, commended all ranks of the military as well as civilian defence staff for the sacrifices they make in ensuring that the nation is secured and peaceful.
The Chief of the Defence Staff, Vice Admiral Seth Amoama stated that although crime and insurgence have become sophisticated world-wide, there was the need for constant training, ultra-modern equipment, and the development of pragmatic strategies to keep pace with these changing trends. Therefore, CDS commended the government and all stakeholders for their immense contribution towards the enhancement of the operational capabilities of GAF.
The CDS assured Ghanaians of the readiness and commitment of GAF in ensuring peace and security in the country.
