The Executive Director of the Africa Centre for International Law and Accountability (ACILA), Mr. William Nyarko is of the view that the police should not have gotten into investigating the allegation of corruption made by A-Plus on Facebook against the two Deputy Chief of Staff, Abu Jinapor and Francis Asenso-Boakye.
According to him, ‘such policing of speech on social media was not [ads1]needed in a democratic society’.
Some weeks ago, controversial musician cum politician, Kwame Obeng Asare popularly known as A-Plus in his facebook post accused the two Deputy Chief of Staff, Abu Jinapor and Francis Asenso-Boakye of being corrupt.
His post generate huge national interested and eventually caught the attention of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for which he (A-Plus) was invited by the CID to substantiate his allegations and or assist in investigating his allegations.
The CID last week, after concluding its investigations in a press statement signed by the Director General of the CID, COP Bright Oduro described A-Plus’ allegations against the duo as “baseless, unsubstantiated and lacks credibility”.
However, less than week of after CID had cleared the duo of any wrongdoing, a leaked audio believed to be excerpts of a conversation between A-Plus and a female investigator sought to downplay the CID report and suggested a cover-up by the police to protect the image two public officials at the presidency.
In that audio, the police CID appears to be negotiating with A-Plus to drop the case against the two officials even through what he (A-Plus) said appears not to be too far from the truth after what they have seen during their investigations.
In a sharp reaction, ACP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, Deputy Director of CID admitted that the voice in the audio is hers but accused A-Plus of doctoring the tape to tarnish his image.
In reaction the CID officers claims, Mr. William Nyarko said the CID’s having stepped in facebook post allegations of A-Plus, “it appears the police investigation was intended to whitewash the image of those who were accused of alleged corruption as the recorded conversation between A-Plus and the senior police CID officer shows”

Personally I think that the police shouldn’t even have gotten into investigating the allegation of corruption made by A-Plus on Facebook against the two officials at the Presidency.
Such policing of speech on social media was not needed in a democratic society.
The two officials could have brought a private action of defamation against A-Plus if they wanted to pursue the matter.
Having stepped in, it appears the police investigation was intended to whitewash the image of those who were accused of alleged corruption as the recorded conversation between A-Plus and the senior police CID officer shows
