A youth group believed to be supporters of the disputed MP-elect John Peter Amewu at Hohoe in the Volta Region has clashed with supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) during a street protest against the EC over the just ended general elections.
The NPP 2020 parliamentary candidate for the Hohoe Constituency won the seat with EC disenfranchising some communities on the eave of the election. Subsequently, the NDC has secured a court injection to stop the Energy Minister from being sworn into office until the final determination of the matter before the court.
This morning tension was boiling as the NDC protesters who started a peaceful protest as part of the party’s nationwide resistance against the presidential verdict declared by the Electoral Commission was interrupted and cut short. The protest started peacefully at Atabu without any hitches with the police protecting the protesters through town, however to the surprise of the protesters the armed group came from nowhere and blocked them. Today’s morning demonstration is the seventh time the NDC is demonstrating in the Volta Region alone. 
The demonstrators never reacted to Amewu’s armed men as they were exercising their constitutional rights but were illegally stopped by this group angry Peter Amewu’s boys who were fully armed with machetes, clubs, woods and other arms prevented them from moving into the main Hohoe township. However the leadership of the NDC were on top of issues as they spoke to their supporters for calm and peace.
The leadership of the NDC then informed their people to suspend today’s protest and asked them to retreat for the safety of themselves and for peace to prevail.
The Regional Chairman of the NDC, Henry Kwadjo Ametepe added that they are going back to reorganize for another day.
The police and other security services moved in to ensure a peaceful resolution of the incident.
