The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has today, April 1, 2024, increased the application fees for a Ghanaian passport from GH₵100 to GH₵500 for a 32-page standard and GH₵644 for a standard 48-page booklet.
Now, expedited service for the 32 pages is GH₵700 and GHC800 for a 48-page booklet.
Previously, it was GH₵150 for an expedited 32-page booklet and GHC₵00 for a 48-page booklet.
In December 2023, Foreign Affairs Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey told Parliament’s Committee on Subsidiary Legislation that the passport application fees should be increased to allow the ministry to reduce losses in printing passport booklets.
She said the current fee of $7.7 for the acquisition of a Ghanaian passport was the lowest in the sub-region. Adding that “it is time for Ghanaians to pay realistic prices for passports they acquire to travel beginning next year.”
“Ghanaians pay just about GH¢100 for a passport, yet to produce one passport booklet, it costs GH¢400, which means that for every passport that an applicant acquires, the government has to put in GH¢300, and this is not sustainable,” the minister noted.
The new fees are updated on the online passport application page of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The fees are from the Ministry’s 2024 Budget Estimates document, which was approved by Parliament’s Subsidiary Legislation Committee.
It worth noting that the new fees as proposed by the Ministry received no objection at the committee level hence it being effected today after 21 days.
