Over $50,000 needed to refix GRIDCo collapsed tower

Management of Ghana Grid Company says the company will have to cough a little over US$50,000 to refix one of its pylons which was hacked down.

Yesterday at about 1 am, one of the towers of GRIDCo, standing close to the Tema head office, was hacked down by unknown persons.

The tower fell on another pylon, but, the situation did not affect power supply, though it is responsible for transmitting power from Karpower, VRA plants and AKSA to the national grid. The vandalised tower carries power to Tema and most parts of Accra.

The destruction of the state property drew the attention of the sector Minister, John Peter Amewu, who, upon seeing the dastardly act, said: “This is a pure act of vandalism.”

Before his arrival at the scene, personnel from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had visited the crime scene to begin investigations.

They picked one hacksaw blade and cut bolts and knots at the foot of the vandalised tower.

Accessing the damage caused to the tower and the gravity of work engineers would have to do to detach the fallen tower from the standing one, and replace the damaged tower, GRIDCo estimated that it would cost the company a region of US$50,000.

The vandalism could result in some erratic power supply to most parts of Accra and Tema, and Jonathan Amoako-Baah, CEO of GRIDCo, said the company would review the situation to determine the impact of power supply.
