Nzema East MUSEC destroys ‘galamsey’ equipment on Ankobra river

The Nzema East Municipal Security Council in the Western Region on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 carried out an operation against illegal mining activities on the Ankobra River, destroying some equipment in the process.

The operation which under the instruction of the Western Regional Minister, Mr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, and led by the Nzema East Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Frank Okpenyen, was jointly carried out by operatives of National Security in the Western Region, the Western Regional Police operations, and the National anti-illegal mining taskforce.

The operation also led to flushing out of illegal miners on the Ampansie to Dominase stretch of the Ankobra River.

Some 21 Changfang machine platforms were destroyed in the operation, while the illegal miners left the sites.

The fight against Illegal small-scale mining activities in the Western Region in particular has remained a major concern that calls for continued collaborative efforts by all stakeholders, considering the level of negative impact on the environment.

The Regional Minister in earlier development called on the Regional House of Chiefs for their support in dealing with the menace.
