NPP invites NDC to preliminary meeting over party thugs disbandment

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has invited the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to a preliminary meeting this week over the disbandment vigilante groups associated with them.

This follows a call by President Akufo-Addo during his State of the Nation’s Address for a bipartisan meeting over the menace of political vigilantism.

The NDC which welcomed the President’s call, has requested that the meeting is extended to involve all political parties and other stakeholders including the security agencies in the country.

The largest Opposition party also suggested an independent moderator for the meeting and recommended the Peace Council in letters addressed to the President.

President Akufo-Addo, has, however, in his response, rejected the request for moderator explaining that the NDC and NPP should be able to solve issues themselves without external assistance.

But the NPP in a letter signed by General Secretary, John Boadu said it is time they meet and agree on which stakeholders to engage and also discuss other suggestions made by the NDC.

“…We think that time is now rife for the parties to hold this crucial meeting, which the whole nation has been looking forward to. We’ve also taken notice of your request to expand the scope of the engagement to include multiple stakeholders, and wish to assure you that the NPP avails itself for this consideration at the meeting, which will afford the two parties the opportunity to agree on the various stakeholders to be invited in the subsequent engagements,” the NPP stated in the letter addressed to the NDC.
