The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has overwhelmingly endorsed and elected the country’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as the party’s leader and flagbearer for the forthcoming 2024 presidential elections.
After over 2000 delegates cast their ballots, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was crowned the winner, with 61.47% securing the party’s endorsement to lead the NPP in the 2024 general elections.
The certified and finial results announced by a deputy commissioner of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, stated that Dr. Bawumia secured 118,210 votes, representing 61.47%, while his closest political rival, Kennedy Agyapong, polled 71,996 votes, representing 37.41%.
Dr. Afriyie Akoto, who placed a distant third, polled 1,459 votes, representing 0.76%, while Addai-Nimoh managed only 731 votes, representing 0.41%.
In total, 192,446 delegates cast their ballots in Saturday’s presidential primary, with the total valid votes being 193, 346. 900 votes were rejected, and turnout stood at 94.63%.
Dr. Bawumia’s political ambition to lead the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) as flagbearer was indeed fraught with fierce competition and political drama, including his political rival Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who nearly gave Dr. Bawumia a showdown.
Meanwhile, after the official declaration that Dr. Bawumia emerged victorious to lead the party, Ken Agyapong, in his congratulatory remarks, promised to work tirelessly with Dr. Bawumia to give the NDC a total showdown in the 2024 general elections.
