Never suppress the will of the masses– Prof. Opoku-Agyemang cautions EC

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang - NDC Vice presidential candidate

The running mate of the NDC, Professor Naana Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has cautioned the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct free, fair and transparent elections come December 7. She said there should be no attempts by the election conducting body suppress the will of the masses.

Speaking at her official outdooring UPSA, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang underscored the essence of the EC finding pragmatic ways to manage its operations in a doubt-free atmosphere.

She indicated that the Commission is stocked with so many questionable incidents that have made it cumbersome to defend its credibility. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang mentioned the Commission’s posture to the missing equipment as one of them and wondered how come the EC disrespect Ghanaians that much.

“So, the Electoral Commission is struggling to defend its credibility and until the commission tells us that the equipment means nothing, everyone should believe that there are no issues to worry about. How did disrespect get so high? Actions that impoverish and disenfranchise do not necessarily translate into mindedness in people who are angry, hungry and in people who are oppressed.

According to the former Education Minister, the Electoral Commission’s inability to address delicate issue emanating from its quarters will always open the flood gate for mistrust and suspicion by the public. She urged the Commission to learn from the past and be open to criticism from the people who “validate” their existence.

“On the contrary, again check the details in our history. Electoral Commission, I address you directly. It is in the national interest and in your own interest to make transparent what has been and is going on in your establishment.

“The truth will not be suppressed. You cannot be so independent as to disregard the people who validate your existence. It cannot happen anywhere. EC, a word to the wise is Assin North,” she stated.
