The Inspector General of Police (IGP) says the police could work to their best limit and showed professionalism when the NDC entrusted their electoral security in their hands.
David Asante-Apeatu said no record of vigilante group was captured at the presidential primaries the National Democratic Congress (NDC) held in all the 256 constituencies.
“The NDC gave us the free-hand to carry out our professional duties as well-trained police personnel at their last elections, and we did clean work,” Mr. Asante-Apeatu testified on Tuesday, when he made an appearance at the Emile Short Commission of Enquiry.
The Commission was set up and inaugurated by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, on behalf of President Akufo-Addo, to collect information and advise the government after some thugs visited brutalities on some supporters of the NDC at a bye-election at Ayawaso West Wuogon.
The gory incident forced the National Chairman of the party to withdraw from the contest, to prevent the consequences of reprisal attacks.
The IGP told the Commission that the Ghana Police Service is professional enough to maintain peace and order and crack the whip, irrespective of whose ox is goad should politicians stop interrupting in their operations.
He told the Commission that investigations were ongoing and assured Ghanaians that the assailants in the Wuogon mayhem would be arrested.
