NDC MPs boycott Akufo-Addo’s inaugural ceremony

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) members of Parliament in the early hours of Thursday, January 7, disclosed they would boycott the swearing-in of incumbent president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in spite of winning the Speaker of parliament position in the House.

Former Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak, declared Speaker Alban Bagbin could go ahead and oversee the inauguration.

It follows after the house was suspended for a couple of hours in preparation for the inauguration of President Akufo-Addo.

The NDC MPs, however, refused to attend the inauguration ceremony, a boycott which will not come as a surprise to many Ghanaians considering that the party’s presidential candidate in the December 7 polls, John Dramani Mahama is contesting the outcome of the elections at the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, Akufo-Addo has been sworn-in as President-elect of Ghana’s fourth (4th) republic.

He being re-elected for second term took the oath of office at a colorful ceremony in Parliament.

“I Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo do in the name of the almighty swear that I’ll bear true faith and allegiance. I’ll uphold, protect, preserve the sovereignty of Ghana,” he said while being sworn-in by Chief justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah”.

The event attracted several heads of states including the President of Guinea, Alpha Conde, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, President of Guinea Bissau, Angola’s Vice President, Bornito de Sousa, Senegalese President Macky Sall, et al.
