MMDCEs: Nana Addo’s Yendi nominee rejected

President Akufo-Addo’s Municipal Chief Executive nominee for Yendi, Alhaji Ahmed Yussuf Abubakar, has been rejected by the Assembly members.

He polled 21 votes out of a total of 41 ballots on Friday, September 24, 2021.

Nominees are required to get at least two-thirds of the total votes cast to be confirmed.

Regional Electoral Commissioner, Lucas Yiryil who announced the results stated the nominee had 51 percent of the votes and is qualified for a second round, which will be conducted by the Electoral Commission within 10 days.

Alhaji Abubakar was renominated as MCE of Yendi by President Nana Addo and announced by Dan Botwe, Minister for Local Government and Decentralization on Sunday, September 19, 2021, despite the recommendation of Zakaria Abubakari Saddiq to the president by the vetting committee.

Present at the ceremony today was the Northern Regional Minister, Shani Alhassan Shaibu.

The nominee served as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) in President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s first term.

Meanwhile, the first of 260 nominated metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs) have been approved by assembly members.
