The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) taskforce working on the aftermath of a fire disaster that destroyed several shops and goods worth millions of Ghana Cedis last month, has announced it will demolish a three-storey building that was affected tomorrow, Sunday, August 22.
Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, told Accra-based Joy TV in an interview that, the assembly will be taking the action following a report recommendation by a seven-member committee of enquiry that was commissioned to investigate the factors that led to the July 5, 2021 incident.
Meanwhile traders who still operate their businesses at the affected market, in reaction to the announcement, have expressed fears they may lose their source of livelihood should the AMA’s intended demolition takes place. They are pleading with the authorities to factor in their plight in the exercise.
The committee of enquiry, chaired by Mr. Henry Plange, AMA Metro Director of NADMO in its report on the disaster recommended among other measures on demolition of the existing market structure for reconstruction said, “As per the result of the structural integrity assessment test on the current nature of the burnt building, it should be pulled down for reconstruction since its current state was a risk to those who would like to occupy it and to the general public who may have to do business there”,.
