Mahama now talks like true NDC – Security expert

John Dramani Mahama’s strong-worded message to the government that violence is in the DNA of every political party has been lauded by a security expert Bernard Agbe.

In the words of Mr Agbe, he said: “John Mahama is now talking like a true NDC person. He used to be too soft like his predecessor and that posture does not spark an urge in supporters.”

Addressing some party supporters at Adaklu, Volta Region, on his campaign tour of the Region, John Mahama said: “NPP is taking this power as a matter of life and death. They said it already, ‘All die be die,’ and they are acting out and living the reality of the all die be die. And so, we are not going to joke in 2020.

“And I am sounding a warning to the NPP…we are going to match them boot for boot. We respect the constitution of this country, and the NDC is a democratic party, and that is why we abide by the rules of the constitution.

But the same constitution says we should resist anybody who attempts to subvert the constitution. And when you go rampaging with forces and intimidating people when they should come out and vote, you are subverting the constitution and we have the right to resist you.

And let me sound a word of caution…when it comes to unleashing violence, nobody can beat the NDC to it because we have a revolutionary root. We are acting as a docile party to respect the rule of law.

But, if we believe that the government cannot protect our people, and we believe that the government is using its vigilante groups and illegal forces to intimidate and harass and injure our people, then, we will have to advise ourselves.”

John Mahama’s words were in reaction to the thuggish act reported at Ayawaso, where, during a by-election last Thursday, some armed personnel from the National Security, unleashed brutalities on some civilians without provocation.

Albeit his words received a rapturous applause from his audience and most supporters of the NDC, some of Ghana’s Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) condemned Mr Mahama for his utterances.

But, Bernard Agbe, a security expert, thumbed up John Mahama for not mincing words by reminding the government that unleashing violence is not the preserve of only one political party.

In his view, Mr Mahama’s words would awaken the ‘fighting spirit’ of the NDC, which had been dead for ages.

He concluded that the statement by John Mahama could be understood in diverse ways by the different political parties and the citizenry “and we are all entitled to our understanding of what the man (John Mahama) had said.

“But for me, I applaud him for being bold to say what he had said.”
