SOLIDARITY MESSAGE FROM THE NATIONAL WOMEN’S ORGANIZER OF THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS (NDC) ON THE OCCASION OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Friday, the 8th of March 2019, marks another milestone as we recognize and celebrate Women on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

I wish to use this occasion to salute all women of Ghana wherever they are; this day belongs to that woman who goes to bed on an empty stomach so that her child could eat; it belongs to that woman in the remotest village of the North of Ghana to the South of it who have to travel several kilometers to draw water and firewood for her household; it belongs to the ‘kayayes’; who would carry their children at their back and at same time heavy loads on their head under the scorching sun just to provide a means of livelihood for herself and family; it belongs to the women voices in parliament of Ghana; it belongs to that woman who nursed the sick baby to life; it belongs to that woman who defied all odds to be a voice for the voiceless; it belongs to that young girl with a dream to change the world and make it a better place.

Despite the enormity of the challenges and responsibilities faced by women in this era of globalization; conflicts; inequality and many other issues; the Ghanaian woman has remained resolute and have made tremendous contribution to the well being of their family and the country Ghana.

Louisa May Alcott had this to say “I believe that it is as much a right and duty for women to do something with their lives as for men and we are not going to be satisfied with such frivolous parts as you give us”.

I celebrate dearly that woman who has left that remarkable mark of excellence and professionalism in our hospitals; schools; the pulpit; in mosques; parliament; judiciary; security services; farms, markets and many other places.

As we celebrate this day; may we hold onto these values and strength as mothers; the girl child and leaders.

It is also my greatest hope that women would be given a much bigger and major role in the governance of our country.

I also wish to express gratitude to the NDC for putting into play policies to encourage women participation at top positions within the party and parliament; evidenced in the reduced filing fees for women contestants.

The future is promising; let’s continue to work hard like never before to make the world and our country a better place.

Signed
