A Member of the Communication Team of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Zeinab Alhassan has charged the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Dampare to go back to time and arrest some lawless government officials and members of the pro-NPP vigilante groups who did not only brandish guns but fired them.
Ms. Alhassan was reacting to news reports that the Ghana Police Service has arrested rapper Medikal for brandishing a gun on social media.
“Mr. Dampare, let’s go back to time and do the needful. Hawa Koomson, George Andah, Invisible forces, and Delta forces all pulled and fired guns in public, arrest them” – Zeinab said in a Facebook comment.
Mr. George Andah, the then Deputy Minister of Communications was in July 2020 during the Voters registration exercise was sighted with a pump-action gun. The Awutu Senya West legislator is seen in a photo that has surfaced on social media brandishing the pump-action gun in public.
The photo raised serious concerns days after the Minister of Special Development Initiative, Mavis Hawa Koomson fired gunshots at a registration centre. Hawa Koomson has since justified her actions for firing the warning shots.
“I realized that my peoples’ lives were in danger. I wanted to scare them. None of my men had guns on them when we got to the centre. I fired the shots myself.
“I’m a Member of Parliament, I need to protect myself. It was at dawn, my police escort had not started work yet. So that is a mechanism I have adopted in his absence”.
Hawa Koomson was invited by the Police at the time for questioning but just as the Investigator is alleged to have taken steps to charge her for court, he was reportedly transferred and the case has since not seen the light of the day.
In the early part of 2017 and 2018, the pro-NPP vigilante groups Delta and Invisible Forces have launched attacks on some security officers including storming a high court in Kumasi to free their members who were standing trial for dragging the Ashanti Region Security Coordinator from his office.
