“Let’s demand justice for Alavanyo shooting victims”- Queen mother

Mamaga Ametor Hoebuadzu II, Paramount Queen mother of Alavanyo Traditional Area

The Queen mother of Alavanyo Traditional Area, Mamaga Ametor Hoebuadzu II, has called on the Alavanyo Youth Association, to lead the charge to demand justice, for the victims of the shooting incident that happened at Alavanyo Dzogbedze in January.

The Queen mother’s call follows a press statement read on behalf of the Alavanyo Youth Association by Wisdom Amlado, demanding for the publication of the report, giving a 27th February ultimatum.

In an interview with Awake New’s Abdul-Iddrisu Faisel, Mamaga said the publication of the reports is not really necessary, but justice for the victims would do.

“As a mother, I am calling on the Alavanyo Youth Association, to desert the demand for the publication of the report. That is not what we really need now. What we need is justice, justice for the victims; I mean both the dead and the injured”, she said.

She added that the dead victim’s family need their deceased buried thus, Mamaga is asking the government and the health authorities to speed up with the post-mortem procedure and release the bodies to the families for burial.

“I think we should rather be demanding for justice and well-being of the 18-year-old boy, whose leg has been amputated, we have to demand justice for the other person whose manhood is said to be damaged.”

“To the extreme, the families of the other persons who lost their lives should be released for burial. That’s the only way we can put the families to calm and relieve them of their sorrows. I, therefore, urging the government to speed up the post-mortem procedure, so that the bodies can be released”.

Background

On January 13th, a joint force of police and military personnel shot and killed two young men in Alavanyo Dzogbedze, and injured a couple more people.

The accounts of the unfortunate incident became a matter of contention between the Volta regional police hierarchy and the community, with conflicting accounts of what might have led to the incident, a situation which is suspected to have led to the transfer of the then regional commander, DCOP Francis Doku.

Following the incident, a fact-finding committee was established and chaired by Major Edward Sarpong Appiah, the Commander Rear of the 66 Artillery Regiment in Ho.

The Committee has since 24th January, presented its findings to the Volta Regional Security Council.
