Let’s confront those who seek to destroy our democratic system – Mahama to Ghanaians

John Mahama

Former President John Mahama

The 2020 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress NDC, and petitioner of the 2020 election petition, John Mahama has called on party supporters and Ghanaians as a whole to confront those who seek to destroy our democratic system.

Addressing the media, in his office yesterday 4th March 2021, after the Supreme Court dismissed his petition, Mr Mahama said “It is time we all come together to confront those who seek to destroy the very democratic system that brought them into office. It is our patriotic duty to do so”.

Former President Mahama who relates well with the downtrodden implied he understood the pain and anguish of Ghanaians, hence his admonishment for those had problem with the trial and judgment to direct their energies to confront those who are akin to destroying Ghana’s democratic system.

He further disagreed with the view held by the Supreme Court that his petition was akin to any other civil litigation as the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Adukwei Mensa who is responsible to account for her stewardship was made to evade the law with unconvincing decisions of the court.

“I disagree with the suggestions of our Justices that an election petition is as keen to any other civil litigation and therefore an EC chairperson whose function goes to the heart of our democracy can by a legal sleight of hand avoid accounting for her stewardship in an appropriate forum such as the highest court of the land”.

He then said, “much as I am aware that we are legally bound by the decision of the Supreme Court, I disagree with the process of trial and ruling of the court”.
