KETU SOUTH PARLIAMENTARY RACE: MAMA DZIFA ABLA GOMASHIE, FOGA NUKUNU &TEACHER JOSEPH NYAVI THE MOST POPULAR ASPIRANTS?

INTRODUCTION

Come 2020 the country will experience another eventful election. Ketu-South will be the center of focus since it is the largest constituency in the country.

There is no doubt that KETU-SOUTH has for sometime now being the bulwark of the opposition NDC. The constituency has neutralized and doused the threats from the other large constituencies that also serve as a Palladia to the NPP.

Article 41 of the NDC constitution stipulates that” The National Executive Committee shall notify each constituency executive committee as to the time of the opening of nominations for the contest of primaries for the parliamentary seat in constituency”

Even before this provision is triggered, some aspirants are already engaged in a subtle campaign. The Scorpion Research Team has decided to test the popularity of the aspirants among the people in nine communities in the municipality. These communities are arguably the largest in the constituency and can, therefore, satisfy the objective of the research work. The communities are (Aflao-Central, Avoeme, Awakome , Viepe, Denu, Blekusu, Wudoaba, Agbozume & Klikor).

The research is a voluntary work by some nine erudite individuals who also hail from the communities under the research. We therefore have no interest in advantaging or disadvantaging any of the aspirants, but to help the electorates make an informed decision.

We also believe it will assist the aspirants to plan a lethal campaign strategy to win the hearts of the delegates.

A simple methodology was employed in this research work. A random sampling was adopted. We chose 20 respondents in each community for this simple research. In all 180 respondents were interviewed which constituted the sample size for this work.

OBSERVATIONS

The research team observed that the three most popular aspirants started their ‘submarine’ campaign very early hence their high rate of popularity. Some already have posters. Others use festive occasions to get the attention of the populace.

Elolo white who is a contemplator surprisingly had 29% awareness rate. Messer Nicholas Ezo Worclachie , Kafui Nyasorgbor & Sylvanus Amedorme who are political juggernauts in Ketu-South politics will have to also adopt some level of subtle campaign to keep their awareness rate a bit high.

Parka and Salomey are new entrants whose identities are yet to be known.

Surprisingly some female respondents could not mention Mama Abla Dzifa Gomashie and Carolina Kudah names. These two women contestants have serious work to do when nominations are opened.

Despite the ‘Nicodemus’ campaign strategy employed by some aspirants, 2.7% of the respondents said they are oblivious of the names of some prospective aspirants.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Despite the National Executive Committee is yet to issue guidelines for the conduct of parliamentary elections as stipulated in article 41, we recommend that the real contenders all start some awareness creation to put them in a pole position for the job but this must be devoid of excessive spending.

We also recommend that the real contenders start building a war chest towards the opening of nomination and filing in order to have their messages being heard by all.

Again, we also suggest that the aspirants must guide their communicators in order not to mar the peaceful coexistence that has since been there. The communicators should do issue based marketing of their candidates devoid of insults and personal attacks.

CONCLUSION

The result of the findings is a testament of how the plebs of Ketu-South take politics serious. The result really revealed how popular are the aspirants in Ketu-South. Though some of the respondents were unwilling to respond to the Research Team, but we managed to win their trust.

We hope to get more support in future research works to enable the Scorpion Research Team carryout more intensive research.
