Businessman and member of the National Welfare Committee of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Gabriel Kwamigah-Atokple Tanko, has clarified that he will not be running as an independent candidate, putting to rest speculation that he would.
The decision comes after he contested in the NDC parliamentary primaries for Ketu North and was defeated by Mr. Eric Edem Agbana, the former deputy National Youth Organizer of the party.
The politician stated in a statement released by the Tanko Foundation and seen by Awaknews’ Japhet Festus Gbede that, while he had received encouragement from numerous individuals to run as an independent candidate, he chose not to undermine the significant backing and endorsement he had received from the party’s delegates during the May 13 primaries.

Mr. Tanko cited his love for the NDC as the reason for his decision, emphasizing his commitment to support the party’s parliamentary and presidential candidates for a resounding victory in the 2024 election.
In an interview with Ketaman, the CEO of Fafa Radio, on Sunday, he stated that his primary goal of supporting the elected parliamentary candidate and bringing back former President Mahama to power to save Ghanaians from the current economic hardship remains unchanged.
He also urged his supporters to continue supporting the NDC in order to depose the NPP government and win the Ketu North seat.
The business executive, who has served in various capacities in the NDC both at the constituency and at the national level and is currently a member of the party’s Volta and Ketu North Finance Committees, said he will begin activities to revitalize and reconcile the party in preparation for the crucial 2024 General Election.
