Ghana’s population is now 30.8 million, according to the provisional results of the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC) released by the Government Statistician, Prof Samuel Kobina Annim on Wednesday September 22.
This is up from the 30.42 million figure as of 2019.
Prof Annim opined that, this represents a 6.1 million increase from the 24.7 million recorded during the last count in 2010.
The gender demography also indicated that 50.7% of the national figure are females while males make up 49.3%.
The Statistician described the 2.1% growth rate recorded as the slowest since independence.
Per the 2021 PHC computations, “Ghana’s population has grown five-fold over the past seven decades”.
The update was announced at a press conference in Accra.
Greater Accra remains the most populated area with 5.44 million people, compared to the 4 million recorded in 2010. It is followed by the Ashanti Region’s 5.43 million from 4.8 million recorded amid the last count.
However, the Ahafo Region has the smallest population with 600,000 people.
Ghana population is equivalent to 0.4% of the total world population.
Ghana ranks number 47 in the list of countries and dependencies by population.
The population density in Ghana is 137 per Km2 (354 people per mi2).
The total land area is 227,540 Km2 (87,854 sq. miles).
The median age in Ghana is 21.5 years.
Meanwhile, the final results of the 2021 PHC are expected to be announced in November 2021.
But the Statistical Service reckons that certified figures on the day will not vary significantly from what has been revealed on Wednesday.
