Hon. Joycelyn Tetteh, a Member of Parliament for North Dayi Constituency in the Volta Region is said to be one of the youngest MP in Parliament of Ghana.
Recently, she has been ranked the Best Youngest MP in a research conducted by Dr Isaac Owusu-Mensah and Mr Kaakyire Frempong, both senior lecturers at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana in collaboration with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung. The research is said to be the voice of her constituents.
From a distance, I have been following Jocelyn for some time now and I must confess that not only has she made women proud but has demonstrated beyond measure that in her pursuit that young people in Ghana and Africa are indeed agent of change and development.
How did she became MP?
Ms Tetteh, defeated the then incumbent first-time MP, Mr George Loh in the NDC Parliamentary primaries to become the NDC candidate for the 2016 parliamentary election and won at age 27 and has since not disappointed the confidence repose in her as a young woman.
During the primaries, Joycelyn Tetteh obtained 3,037 votes leaving Layer George Loh with 2,209 and her second contender Prof. Gavua got 1,309.
During the Parliamentary election, she obtained 12,948 votes out of the 16.592 valid votes representing 78.53%. She managed to increase the percentage margin from Mr. Loh’s 75.64% to 78.53% for the NDC. It must be noted that year 2016, there was a general voter turn out decline from 18,145 valid votes in 2012 to 16,592 valid votes in 2016.
The above is a sign from the start that she is a very hardworking woman who know what she want and how to get things down.
Her hardwork has not only been seen by her constituent but recognized internationally with her appointment as Anti Human Trafficking Ambassador for Ghana by the International Organisation on Migration (IOM) in October last year. This indeed is great honor well earned.
He role as Ambassador is to lead the fight against human trafficking.
In Parliament
In Parliament she is a member of the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee as well as the Business Committee.
Ms Tetteh was quoted in the media to have said “as a first-timer in Parliament, it was not easy combining her role in Parliament and the constituency” but she has been doing it and doing it perfectly well.
In February 2018, I read an article written by a University of Education student, Oscar Kombla Bedzrah who is not from her constituency and this is what he has to say: “Hon. Joycelyn Tetteh went beyond the responsibility of making laws to save the precious life of a female constituent from the hands of chronic Osteomyelitis (an infection that affects the bone and may spread through the bloodstream into the bone , or an open fracture or surgery may expose the bone to infection).
She stated clearly that an amount of ten thousand Ghana cedis (10,000) has been spent on drugs and other medical bills for the past two months
Indeed, she has risen beyond her roles and urges, having proved herself as not only as an active political figure but also a philanthropist and a life changer”
I must say without any hesitation that Ghana needs young people like Joycelyn Tetteh in key leadership positions and be given the mandate to effect positive change.
If I have the opportunity, I will explain to the NDC delegates at North Dayi Constituency why they MUST retain her as their Parliamentary Candidate and to the people of North Dayi the reasons they must give her over 90% of the 2020 parliamentary election votes to as an appreciation of her efforts as their MP.
