The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has contested the nomination of the Head of Policy Think tank,[the Institute for Economics Affairs], Jean Mensa for the position of the new Electoral Commission Chairperson.
A statement issued by the NDC and signed by the General Secretary, [ads1]Johnson Asiedu Nketiah said the party was shocked to learn that the President has appointed “a known pro-NPP and an avowed anti-NDC person” to head the Election Management Body(EMB) despite his earlier assurances given to Ghanaians that he would replace the dismissed EC chairperson with someone whose integrity and political neutrality would be above board.
The statement, however, said, the party will shortly tender material evidence that shows the open and covert activities of Jean Mensa, which makes her unfit to occupy the high position of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.
President Akufo-Addo on Monday, July 23, 2018, nominated the Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Affairs, Jean Mensa as the new chairperson of the Electoral Commission(EC). Also, the President nominated Mr. Samuel Tettey, and Dr. Eric Asare Bossman as Deputy Chairpersons, as well as Ms. Adwoa Asuama Abrefa as Member of the Commission.
This follows the removal from office of the former EC chair, Charlotte Osei and her two deputies, Mr Amadu Sulley and Mrs Georgina Opoku Amankwah by President Akufo-Addo after the committee established by Chief Justice, to investigate the petitions brought against them recommended their removal.
