ICU calls for re-engineering Single Spine

The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) says it is time the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) was revised to provide non-discriminatory and fair employee compensation.

The SSSS started implementation nine years ago and it is aimed at establishing fairness in the payment of salaries of government employees at different levels.

Additionally, it sought to bring to an end, or at least, minimise the frequent agitation by public workers on issues surrounding poor salaries paid them by the government.

Solomon Kotei, General Secretary of the ICU, said the SSSS has outlived its purpose and thus, the need for its re-engineering.

He said at this year’s tripartite meeting, therefore, the ICU would make a strong case for the move, saying the levels were not seeing the much-needed increases, as well as many of them running to the top of the normal scale.

By re-engineering the SSSS, Mr Kotei explained that the levels would have to change and “change the various end point to end point that provides the salary structure for equity.”

Since the implementation of the SSSS, most public sector workers have been better off despite the call for its review, which the ICU considers very urgent.
