A former MP for the Builsa North Constituency, Timothy Ataboade Awentiirim has lashed out at the Catholic Bishops Conference over their threat to campaign against opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the party’s refusal to sign a peace pact put together by the Peace council recently.

Rev Father Lazarus Anondee, secretary-General of the Conference, had threatened that the bishops will be fixed to campaign against the NDC for refusing to sign the Peace Council roadmap to ending political party vigilantism.

But speaking on the issue on Weekend Focus on Power 97.9 FM Saturday, Mr Awentiirim noted that the Catholic Bishops Conference seemed to be acting in support of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and not acting for peace to prevail.

He wondered why the Conference would resort to such threats:

“Why do you threaten to campaign against the NDC when it initiated the process of ending vigilantism…When the violence that injured many broke during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-elections, where were the catholic Bishops? We all know those who were behind it yet these Bishops are pretending they don’t know what happened. Their hypocrisy is glaring and we have seen it,” he asserted.

“Their (the bishops) hypocrisy is why I have quit the Catholic Church. I won’t step foot there because the hypocrisy is worrying,” the former MP announced.

Meanwhile, the NDC has demanded an apology from the conference over the comments that the Bishops could campaign against the NDC.
