I never said ‘Mahama led corrupt regime’ – Rawlings fumes

Former President Jerry John Rawlings

Former President Jerry John Rawlings has denied media reports that he stated that ‘Mahama led corrupt regime’ saying some sections of the media are trying to create a wedge between him and former President John Mahama.

Former President Rawlings is particularly not happy with the pro-NPP Daily Guide newspaper’s story, which reported on Thursday that he [Rawlings] has said former President Mahama led a corrupt regime.

On Thursday the newspaper quoted JJ Rawlings, who is known critic of Ex-President Mahama and his appointees, as saying “By the time [the Akufo-Add] administration came into office, the country was literally drowning in the practice of corruption with impunity. This administration has therefore inherited national corruption at its worst.”

According to Daily Guide, Mr. Rawling made the comment when he received a delegation of political leaders from Sierra Leone, led by former Vice-President, Chief Sam-Sumana.

But the former President Rawlings’ office in a statement signed by Kobina Andoh Amoakwa Director of Communications at Mr. Rawlings’ office has debunked the newspaper’s claim, saying it was a figment of the paper’s imagination.

According to the statement, Mr. Rawling did not meet Chief Sam Sumana over the weekend and that the last time they met was in 2017.

“The office wishes to state that Flt Lt Rawlings did not meet Sierra Leonean Vice President Chief Sam Sumana ‘over the weekend’ as reported,” a statement

“The last time Chief Sam Sumana called on former President Rawlings was in late 2017,” it stated.

Mr. Rawling’s office, therefore “cautioned the media to desist from dragging the name of the former President into imaginary circumstances”.
