Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has expressed his belief that it would be unfair for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to discard Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as a candidate for the 2028 elections.
He bases this on the historical precedent that no NPP flagbearer has won the presidency on their first attempt in the Fourth Republic.
He pointed to the multiple attempts made by former Presidents Akufo-Addo and Kufuor before securing victory and argued that Dr. Bawumia should also be given a second chance.
Annoh-Dompreh made these remarks during an interview with Bola Ray on Starr Chat, where he also acknowledged Kennedy Agyapong as a respected party figure but emphasized his support for Bawumia.
He rejected the idea that Bawumia should be dropped after the NPP’s poor performance in the 2024 elections, stating it would be unfair to do so.
However, some factions within the NPP believe that a new face, not tied to President Akufo-Addo’s administration, is necessary to regain voter trust and win the 2028 elections.
