The Police have given reasons behind the arrest and detention of the Parliamentary Candidate (PC) of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Awutu Senya East constituency, Naa Koryo Okunor, on Friday, June 7.
Naa Koryo Okunor was arrested after Police discovered a pump action gun in her vehicle last Sunday. She recently in an interview stated that she acquired the weapon to protect herself against her main opponent.
However, one of the reasons allegedly given by the Cantonment police was that Koryo’s detention was ordered from the Jubilee House at the request of Hawa Koomson, the incumbent MP for Awutu Senya East constituency in the Central Region.
The other reason that many described as ‘hilarious’ was that the weapon’s license bore a name which is not written exactly as the NDC PC’s first name. National Communications Officer of the NDC, Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi, revealed this in a Facebook post sighted by Awakenewsroom.
“Apparently, the case of the Police against the NDC PC for Awutu Senya East for which she is being detained, is that her first name is ‘Phillis’ but that, the name on the license for the weapon she was carrying is ‘Philis’.”
“This whole matter is about whether or not the PC’s name has one ‘l’ or double ‘ll’,” Sammy Gyamfi wrote.
