The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo yesterday, June 11, 2021 launched the Green Ghana Project which aims at planting five million trees as part of the government’s quest “to plant trees and preserve the country’s forest and vegetation for a balanced ecology”.
In a letter addressed to the Speaker of Parliament of Ghana, Alban Bagbin sighted by Awake News, the leadership of the committee constituted to oversee the exercise is requesting a financial donation from personalities to the tune of GH¢125million.
The letter signed by Ehunabobrim Prah Agensaim VI and Dr. Joyce Rosalind Aryee, Chairman and Co-Chair of the Committee respectively said:
“The purpose of this exercise is to encourage Ghanaians and friends of Ghana to plant trees to preserve and protect the country’s forest and vegetation cover for balanced ecology. This Presidential initiative, under the auspices of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources (MLNR) will require an amount of One Hundred and Twenty-Five Million Cedis (GH¢125,000,000.00).”
“In view of the above, we write to your good office to inform your Deputy Speaker, the Clerks, all Members of Parliament, and all other Parliamentary staff about this initiative and invite them to participate and contribute towards the tree planting on Friday, 11th June, 2021.
Though many citizens have embraced the initiative and taken a keen interest to participate in the tree planting exercise but are questioning the rationale behind the government raising such funds from the public at a time that government is yet to make public the accounts of billion of Ghana cedis received from Ghanaians and corporate bodies one year ago towards the Covid-19 fight.
