Gov’t to dispatch security forces to border areas to enforce ban on grain export

The government has announced plans to deploy security forces to border areas in a bid to enforce the ban on grain exports from the country.

In a press briefing on Monday, August 26, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, announced an immediate ban on the export of grains and cereals.

According to the government, this measure is aimed at preventing an impending food crisis due to the drought situation in northern Ghana.

“With immediate effect, the government is placing a ban on the export of grains including maize, rice, and soya bean until the situation normalizes. This measure is essential to ensure the availability of these critical crops on the domestic market,” the Minister said.

Reacting to the move, the Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson Etse Dafeamekpor, claimed that the deployment plan is a guise for other motives as elections draw nearer.

The lawmaker further alleged that the money earmarked to support farmers is actually “campaign cash” intended to benefit the New Patriotic Party.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Dafeamekpor wrote, “[The] suddenly announced Ghc2.5b is nothing but a Campaign Cash. It’s another Election year, once again, Soldiers are being deployed to the BORDERS under guise of fighting food shortages in Ghana…”
