The government of Ghana is expected to take ownership of Africa and Middle East Resource Investment (AMERI) thermal power plant today.
The Volta River Authority, VRA, is mandated to put in place all the necessary protocols for a successful take-over of the 250-megawatt (MW) Africa and Middle East Resource Investment (AMERI) thermal power plant. VRA is expected to add the plant to its stock.
The take over will ultimately lead to cheaper thermal power to Ghanaians as the plant becomes the property of Ghana, resulting in no capacity charges. This ownership will also help VRA’s capacity to tap into the West African market.
Per the terms of the agreement, the government of Ghana is to start maintenance, operations and ownership of the 250-megawatt (MW) thermal power plant on 1st February, 2021. The US$510 million deal that was signed between the government of Ghana and a Dubai based firm, got the power plant into the country in October 2015 to aid solve the power crisis then. The deal was signed on the terms of (BOOT) Build, Own, Operate and Transfer.
However, the government is yet to disclose how prepared they are in the takeover transaction.
