Ghanaians roast Gàs for stirring tribal politics in GAR

Some Ghanaians say they will view and treat with disdain vile political statements by some leadership of the Gà ethnic group in the Greater Accra Region.

It is on record the public utterances by some Ga traditional rulers and their subjects that they will not welcome a non-indigene as their Metropolitan, Municipal, District Chief Executive (MMDCE).

While other ethnic groups that have contributed enormously for the development of the region are calming themselves with such distasteful utterances, a group calling itself the Warriors and Defenders of Ga-Dangme Ethnic Group has cautioned on prohibiting a non-indigene contesting for a Parliamentary seat in the region.

Michael Nii Korley Commordore, the leader of the group, told an Accra-based radio station Monday that the Ga-Dangme ethnic group wants to “go the way of the other ethnic groups in all the other regions.”

He opined, the group has consciously toured the entire country and “indigenes are all occupying Parliamentary positions for their respective native regions,” mentioning a couple of the tribes.

“We will like to make clear to the NPP and NDC, therefore, that if you are not a native of Ga-Dangme, we will not allow you to contest any seat in the region in the 2024 Parliamentary elections,” Michael Nii Korley Commordore said.

He went on to reveal that, the Ga-Dangme traditional leaders and youth are furthermore, preparing a strong defence to impress on stakeholders and the government to change the name of the region to Ga-Dangme Region.

Ga-Dangme ethnic groups including the Yilo-Krobo, Obutu, Manya Krobo and Agortime, he mentioned are the groups that are considering tabling the new name for the Greater Accra Region.

Awake News sought the views of some Ghanaians on the position by the Gà-Dangme ethnic group and interestingly, some indigenes called the bluff of their leaders, fearing the move has the tendency of inciting political tension.

Others too, argued that other regions have most of their indigenes as MPs because unlike the Greater Accra Region, no other region has the most tribes migrating to establish their businesses, inter-marry and engage in viable enterprises which the region has always been the beneficiary.

“It is in the Greater Accra Region that one can count most of the industries in the country, so the region is heavily populated with non-Gàs whose contributions have seen the region developing faster annually in diverse ways,” one of Awake News interviewees said.
