The Ghana Education Service (GES) says it is commiserating with the families of the eight pupils who met their untimely death on their way to school.
The eight drowned while crossing from Atigagorme to attend school at Wayokope in Sene East in the Bono East Region.
According to a GES statement dated January 26, 2023 and signed by Cassandra Twum Ampofo, the head of Public Relations Unit, the eight unfortunately drowned after a private boat of a fisherman capsized while he assisted the children to cross the river to school.
“On Tuesday, 24th January 2023, the eight (8) were part of twenty pupils who got stranded at the river bank at Atigagorme while on their way to school”.
“A fisherman on his private boat decided to assist the children by carrying them across. Unfortunately, the boat capsized, and the eight got drowned”.
The GES say they are distraught by this unfortunate incident and assures the bereaved families of the necessary support.
“The Director-General has already tasked the Regional and District Directors of Education to visit the families whiles preparations are ongoing to immediately provide counselling services to the school in this moment of grief”, it added.
“Once again, we express our deepest condolences to the bereaved families”.
