Free SHS Wahala: Year 2 Gold students to sit home for additional month

The second-year Gold Track Students of the all Senior High School under the double-track system who were originally scheduled to resume school tomorrow, Tuesday, October 15, 2019, will have to sit home for the next one month.

This means, they are expected to resume school on November 12, 2019, according to a statement from the Ghana Education Service signed by the Head of Public Relations Unit, Ms. Casandra Twu Ampofo.

The statement said that “The decision was arrived at during a joint meeting between Management of GES and Conference of Head of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) executives”

“It is anticipated that the new date would enable parents and students, teachers and education workers to prepare adequately for the re-opening for the new academic year”

Following the implementation of the Free SHS by the NPP Government in 2017, the secondary education system has since been facing a series of challenges particularly infrastructure pushing the government to introduce the Double-Track system where one set of students (Green Track) sit home for four months and the other set (Gold Track) enrols due to the huge number of enrolment without its corresponding increase in infrastructure.

Last month, thousands of students, parents and guardians got stranded at the Black Star Square to rectify issues surrounding their placement into the first year of the 2019/2019 academic year. The situation that many described as a very terrible one was refuted by the Education Minister, Dr. Opoku-Prempeh as being a plot by the opposition NDC to make government unpopular by bussing supporters of NDC from across the country to cause those “fake” scenes at the black star square.
