Mawuse Oliver Barker-Vormawor (Barker H Vogues), a governance advisor with significant law and policy expertise in various African countries, in the United States and within the United Nation’s System and a Convener of the #FixTheCountry protest has called on UTAG to embark on a demonstration.
It should be noted that, UTAG has refused to call off its nationwide strike despite an injunction which was secured by the National Labour Commission (NLC) to compel them to return to work.
In a post sighted on facebook by the Awake News, Mr Barker-Vormawor said; “UTAG, hear me out. You need to announce the date for the Demonstration. Do it in Kumasi. Do it fast. You have to reach out to GNAT”.
“The President said the teachers’ reward is in heaven and don’t expect to ever see or smell 1 million Ghana cedis. His wife just wrote a check for almost that amount in less than 24 hours”, it added.
Prof. Marfo expounded that, in 2003, upon a recommendation by a Standing Joint Negotiation Committee (SJNC), government accepted a five years’ (2004-2008) road map for improvement in the levels of remuneration for senior members of the public universities in the country.
According to the road map, from January 2012, a lecturer ought to have been paid the cedi equivalent of $2,084.41. However, lecturers presently earn a cedi equivalent of $997.84, a drop of $1,086.57 which is more than the lecturer’s take home pay.
In respect of that, Oliver Barker-Vormawor has admonished UTAG to demonstrate in order to “demand respect for the profession in a dramatic way”.
