President Akufo-Addo’s nomination of Yohanne Ammah Ashitey as the next Tema Metro MCE has sparked tension in his party in the constituency.
The Tema Metro is made up of East and Central Tema constituencies and, while the supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the former are ecstatic by the President’s choice, their colleagues in Central Tema hold the view that the President has been ungrateful to them.
To the Central Tema NPP, previous Metro Chief Executives (MCE) had come from the East Tema constituency where the party had hardly consolidated its votes for the party in general elections.
Now, AwakeNews is gathering information of some protests in the offing by supporters of the NPP in Central Tema against the new nomination, particularly when the NPP in East Tema performed abysmally in the last general elections.
The supporters observed that while the Central Tema NPP voted massively to appreciate their votes for the parliamentary and presidential candidates in the 2020 general elections, their counterparts in East Tema depreciated their votes, thus, losing the parliamentary seat to the NDC with John Mahama, the NDC’s presidential candidate, polling over 50+ valid votes.
By their comparison, the NPP in Central Tema said the party executives presented Charles Boateng, their current constituency chairman, to the presidency for the MCE position, but he was not considered.
That, the supporters of the NPP in Central Tema claim is an admission of the President’s succumbing to threats by the Tema Traditional Council (TTC) which openly threatened sour reception to any non-indigene the President would nominate as MCE.
Therefore, for President Akufo-Addo to kowtow to tribal pressure from the TTC to nominate a Gà for another for reasons that Tema is a Gà land, the supporters of the NPP in the Central Tema constituency, AwakeNews gather, have declared strike actions, decided to feign enthusiasm in all future party activities and ready to embark on series of protests to force President Akufo-Addo to give them a nominee from their constituency instead of the East Tema constituency always enjoying that high position.
