In a press statement issued on August 16, 2021, EOCO noted that there were scammers who had been targeting and calling salaried workers and people who may be struggling financially to take advantage of them by persuading them to secure loans.

“These unscrupulous individuals call and send text messages, promising loans at affordable rates, and promising to coach individuals to secure loans for free”, the statement said.

The statement further noted that the scammers usually also pose as staff of the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD), where they persuade salaried workers, promising to assist them access their locked up funds at the department.

To help prevent falling a victim in such circumstances, the ECO said salaried workers in particular should be on the lookout for red flags such as; a demand for payment upfront or after, instructions to submit personal details to a third party, persistent calls and messages to convince one to go for a loan.
