Environmental Literacy: A Leap For Girls In Northern Ghana

April 19, 2017- In recognition of the 47th Earth Day today, Girls for Environment (G4E) is joining individuals and organizations around the world in the celebration and to dedicate this day to ensuring that women and girls become environmental and climate literate citizen, poised to take action and be a voice for change. G4E is part of Conservation Alliance’s (CA) Environmental Education Program (EEP) to create the platform for young people to learn about the environment and become good environmental stewards.

The promotion of environmental literacy especially among girls in school is a big step in solving most of Ghana’s environmental challenges since women can better safeguard natural resources for posterity. “Women and girls are untapped agents of change and a powerful resource in the battle against climate change.  As a country, we need to build a global citizenry fluent in the concepts of climate change and aware of its unprecedented threat to our planet through environmental literacy”.

The Girls for Environment initiative is empowering girls in school with knowledge to inspire action in defense of environmental protection through activities such as; connect with nature trips, learning web-based toolkit on the environment, documentary shows on environment, among others. Environmental literacy programs in schools is not only an engine for enforcing environmental laws but also for creating green technologies and jobs. G4E plans to engage more women and girls particularly in Northern Ghana to be at the forefront of issues on natural resources thereby improving environmental condition in Northern Ghana.

As we mark World Earth Day with the theme: “Environmental and Climate Literacy”, Girls for Environment is calling on the government to help promote climate change adaptation programs with the prospects of stemming the tide of girl child migration to the south. Improving environmental literacy among women and girls will foster better community decision making and a greater resilience to climate change.
