Election 2020: Your solid track record will deliver you victory – Ghanaians to Mahama

Former President John Mahama

Many political parties are geared up for the election amid their campaign coming to a halt. The major two political parties, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have all launched their manifestoes including the other smaller parties.

As Ghana has just about three days to go to the polls to elect both President and Members of Parliament to steer the affairs of the nation from January 2021, Awake Election Watch hit the street across the country to seek views of voters on party or flagbearer they will their votes for.

Awake Election Watch went out to enquire from Ghanaians what they make of the promises of the various parties in their 2020 Election manifesto. For many Ghanaians, the promises of the two parties in their manifestoes for the 2020 elections are not enough to help them decide which political party they will vote for rather the past achievements of those making the promises is what will make them trust the words of their 2020 manifesto and vote accordingly. To them, promising to do something is as easy as saying it, but what makes impact in their lives is delivering on those promises.

“This election is between two presidents. One a former president seeking re-election and the other an incumbent president seeking a second term, which has never happened in the history of Ghana” – John Tetteh, Director of Photography, AM Network from Somanya in the Eastern Region.

“So you will agree with me that the moment actually present, is an opportunity for us to review what John Mahama achieved as a president for 4years and what President Akufo-Addo has also achieved for the 4years.” – Mr. Tetteh added

Abigail Mensah, a nurse in Western Region said “when I was in school, things were difficult but for now it’s worse, so for me am looking at the performance or track records of John Mahama and Akufo-Addo”.

Aba-era Justice Asandoo a Student of University of Development Studies, Tamale campus noted “for me, is what you did when we gave you power, it is not now that you will paint a picture of heaven on earth for our votes. To me track records is paramount”.

Alima Ishaak a leader of women focused civil society organization in Accra also indicated that ” when money is going into infrastructure that is what I like, things that you can see, the Roads, Hospitals, Modern-day markets and the what of view. You know, a government that has performed doesn’t need to be talking too much, I know who to cast my vote for.”

Awake Election Watch conducted this interview across all the 11 regions and what people were yearning for is, development and job creation.

Many of the Ghanaians are of the view that John Mahama has a better track and visible records than President Akufo-Addo and if anything at all they will give their votes to Mahama.

“In fact, if you look at John Mahama’s records, he borrowed about 57billion Ghana Cedis during their tenure but have many projects like the Terminal 3 Airport, Ho Airport; Ridge Hospital, Kwame Nkrumah Interchange; Kejetia, Ho, Asawase, Kotokroba markets; the University at Somanya; the Building of about 121 brand new schools (E-blocks); Saglime Housing project;  Afari Hospital, University of Ghana Medical Centre; Dodowa Hospital; Water Expansion projects; Ga East Municipal Hospital; among many others to show. Whiles Akufo-Addo on the other hand borrowed over 140billion Ghana Cedis in the last 4years – an amount which is even higher than the monies borrowed by successive governments from Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to John Mahama but sadly has nothing to show” – Micheal Ayibasa, Bongo in the Upper East Region has toutedMahama E-Blocks

When alerted that President Akufo-Addo has Free SHS to show, this is what he has to say:

“The free SHS is not even financed from the money borrowed. Point of correction. The policy in funded from the oil revenue with an amount of about 8billion cedis even at the time that the oil revenue has doubled than what was being gotten during Mahama’s era” – Mr. Ayibasa

“Akufo-Addo and the NPP are total failures and must be voted out – He fumes

For John Mahama, his past solid track records will deliver him victory come December 7, 2020.” – Michael stated

“I am a nurse, and do you know what building of more hospitals mean to me?, I and my colleague health workers will get a place to work for our daily bread whiles saving lives.”
