Election 2020: EC disregard Mahama’s petition to put declaration of results on hold –Haruna Iddrisu

The  Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Tamale South Hon. Haruna Iddrisu says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is disappointed that a petition addressed to the Electoral Commission (EC) by its presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama to express his hitch with the presidential results of the just ended 2020 general election, was turned down without alternative.

At a press conference by the party on Wednesday night  following the Electoral Commission’s announcements  of the results,  he indicated that, all exertion by NDC flagbearer, John Mahama to have the cited malfeasance remedied before any substantive pronouncement was made about the election results were blatantly ignored by the EC chair.

“It is even regrettable to note that this evening before her declaration, John Dramani Mahama contested the election as a candidate and therefore a stakeholder and interested party.

“Even when he filed a petition to the Electoral Commission detailing his concerns in the process of collation leading to a declaration, that was treated with the utmost contempt. That we consider unacceptable,” he noted.

Haruna Iddrisu renowned that “the overwhelming evidence available to us makes it impossible for us to accept this spurious and hurried conclusion of the Electoral Commission of Ghana” and thus will vehemently reject and resist the results of the elections as declared.

He insisted that “Ghana’s democracy has come under severe attack following the declaration by the Electoral Commission, that Candidate Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has won the 2020 Presidential elections.

He added, the circumstances surrounding the victory of candidate Akufo-Addo in the just ended general elections is a heavy blow to the democracy of Ghana and thus the country “needs some rescue urgently.” If not rescued these attacks will foster and grow into future elections and that will disfigure our track record, as a true democratic nation.”

To counter balance, the NDC has served notice that it has rejected the outcome of the December 7 polls because there is incontrovertible proof that the election was flawed.

The party also says it does not recognize incumbent President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the rightfully-elected President of Ghana.

“As a party, we have had extensive consultations and detailed analysis of the outcome of the elections as announced by Jean Mensa. We have come to only one irresistible conclusion, that it is a flawed discredited election and therefore we reject the presidential result without any reservation. We roundly reject and out rightly reject the declaration of the sitting president as the winner of the 2020 elections. In due course, our flagbearer will brief the nation and the international community,” Haruna revealed.
