The National Democratic congress NDC, has described the decision of the Electoral Commission to close the 2024 general elections at 3pm, as a mechanism bound disenfranchise voters.

Addressing a press conference yesterday 20th May, 2021, the director of elections Hon. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah reacted to the EC, emphasising that the decision is a “poorly thought-through alternative which is bound to disenfranchise eligible voters and create needles problems for our electoral system”.

According to the NDC, it is baffling and mind-boggling for the EC to propose such change since the traditional closing of polls since 1992 is 5pm and has worked perfectly without any challenges whatsoever.

NDC maintained that the 3pm closure of polls is problematic, particularly so given the undue delay usually recorded in the delivery of electoral materials to some polling stations coupled with other technical challenges that usually characterize voting.

Hon. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah decried that it was in same vain of haste that led the EC to the declaration of a patently flawed results that yielded a percentage aggregate of more than 100%, by the Returning Officer, Mrs. Jean Adukuwei Mensah.

The National Democratic congress, made its position on the time to close 2024 polls known, stating that “the current arrangements of Closing polls at 5pm has worked perfectly in seven general elections in this country and does not require any fixing. Like the chairperson (Jean Mensah) said in her speech, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.
